What is Microsoft FrontPage, and why/how would I use it to maintain my site?

Microsoft FrontPage is one of the most popular web design tools today.  Several of our web developers use FrontPage exclusively to design sites.  This site was also designed with FrontPage.  If you have Microsoft FrontPage installed on your computer, you may use it to author pages online by connecting directly to the OxONet web servers.  It will provide you with a visual web page editor, where pages may be written using an interface very similar to Microsoft Word.   FrontPage also supports various "active" components which provide dynamic site content such as hit counters, rotating banners, and buttons.  It also saves you the added chore of updating your pages on OxONet's servers whenever you make changes, because it publishes directly to the server automatically.

The alternative to using FrontPage is using File Transfer Protocol (FTP) to upload your files to OxONet's servers.  This is the "traditional" way to maintain a web site, although it involves a little more work than using FrontPage.  Note: If you are using FrontPage to manage your site, you should not use FTP at all, because doing so may corrupt the extensions which allow FrontPage to work on your account.

What are CGI scripts, and why/how would I use them?

CGI scripts have a very variety of uses.  They are programs that run on web servers, and tyically provide dynamic content to people browsing your web site.  Some simple, common examples of CGI scripts are hit counters, guestbook systems, and information-gathering tools like OxONet's Account Configuration Wizard.

All OxONet accounts allow you to create or download your own CGI scripts and run them on your web site.  They should be placed in the cgi-bin directory on your OxONet account, and they may then be reference with the URL: http://<your site name here>/cgi-bin/<your script name here>.
