Using your OxONet Account

I'm trying to configure my e-mail program to use my OxONet e-mail. What should I enter for the e-mail servers?

You have two choices to make regarding your mail before you set up your mail client.  First you must choose whether to use a secure (SSL) connection for your e-mail, or an insecure connection.  We strongly recommend that you use SSL if your mail client supports it.  Second, you must choose whether to use POP3 or IMAP to access your e-mail.  In most cases, we recommend that you use POP3 since it is simpler to manage.

Please follow the steps below for your chosen method.

Secure (SSL) Connection (recommended)

  • For your incoming mail server (POP3 or IMAP), enter mail.oxonet.com.
  • Indicate that your mail server requires an SSL connection.  In Outlook or Outlook Express, there is a checkbox that says "This server requires a secure connection".  For other mail clients, please refer to your documentation.
  • Set your incoming mail server login and password to the login and password for your OxONet account.
  • If using IMAP, set your IMAP root folder to "mail".
  • For your outgoing mail server (SMTP), enter mail.oxonet.com.
  • Indicate that your outgoing mail server requires an SSL connection.  This should be done similarly to the incoming mail server.
  • Indicate that your outgoing mail server requires authentication.  Please refer to your mail client's documentation if you are unsure about how to do this.  If your client asks you to provide login information for outgoing mail, it is the same as your login for incoming mail.

Note that in an effort to discourage spammers, some ISP's block outgoing connections on TCP port 25, the default port for SMTP.  If this applies to you, you have two options:

  • Manually change your SMTP port to bypass your ISP's restriction.  OxONet provides standard alternative SMTP ports that you can use if you can't get to port 25.  First, try using port 587.  If this doesn't work, you can try port 465.
  • If the previous option does not work for you, you may be forced to use your ISP's SMTP service for your outgoing mail.  In this case you will need to contact your ISP to get your outgoing mail settings.  You should still be able to send mail using your OxONet e-mail address through your ISP's SMTP service.

Insecure Connection

Please only use an insecure connection to our mail servers if you absolutely must, for example if you are behind a very restrictive firewall.  Using an insecure connection sends your login and password "in-the-clear" over the Internet, which may make your account more vulnerable to a hacker.

  • For your incoming mail server (POP3 or IMAP), enter mail.oxonet.com.
  • Set your incoming mail server login and password to the login and password for your OxONet account.
  • For your outgoing mail server (SMTP), you must use your ISP's SMTP service.  OxONet does not provide insecure SMTP service (why not?).  Please contact your ISP for outgoing mail settings.  You should still be able to send mail using your OxONet e-mail address through your ISP's SMTP service.
